San Francisco - Still Wild At Heart, a film by Mellissa Peabody

Although the setting for the film Still Wild at Heart is in the heart of the city of San Francisco there are some amazing parallels to coyotes in Vancouver.  The fact that the San Francisco Bay area is a coastal port city that is accessed by several bridges is one apparent link.  In February 2008 a coyote was reported to the coyote hotline crossing the Lions Gate Bridge in early morning and a few days later another report sighted a coyote in Stanley Park.  A similar story is described in the film as a coyote was seen trying to cross the mighty Golden Gate Bridge in search of new territory.

Like Stanley Park, San Francisco is surrounded by water on three sides and the city was the only California county without a coyote population-until 2001.  In a virtual case study of the coyote's arrival in urban America, this compelling one-hour film unfolds first in San Francisco, then pursues the coyote story across the national canvas-to New York City's Central Park; to Chicago, where more than 2,000 coyotes live today; and to rural California ranch lands, where sheep ranchers find some early success in using innovative non-lethal predator control methods to protect their livestock.

We also learn how coyotes impact urban and suburban ecosystems, and how we can coexist with them safely.  And throughout, this lyrical natural history film features beautiful, original, and entertaining footage of coyotes and other urban wild creatures - quail, foxes, raccoons, herons, opossums, and parrots - that survive and thrive in our challenging urban habits.
