The Steller's jay sometimes looks black, until light hits the bright blue colours on its wings, chest, and tail. When the Steller's jay gets angry, it raises its crest, or top of its head. Jays have long, powerful bills, and are omnivorous, which means they will eat plants and animals, including insects and seeds.
These native birds are easily seen in forests and even backyards, especially around bird feeders. They will eat the seeds that have been left in bird feeders for other birds, and are attracted to handouts of food. However, like other wildlife, they can find their own food and should not be fed.
